About Us
Leons Auto Center / J & L Auto Body have been in business for many years serving Cheshire County and the surrounding area. The company was started by Leon Watkins and John Fontaine and both are very involved in local community events.
You may have watched the J & L Auto Body women’s softball team or Leon’s Auto Center men’s softball team play in the city league. The Zamboni used for the ice arena is serviced by Leon’s and the paint and lettering was done by J & L.

All About Leon and John
Leon Watkins
Leon began his auto services career in the 70’s after graduating from Keene High School where he was top in his class.
By age of 21, he was shop foreman at a local dealership and eventually ran the parts and service departments. During Leon’s years of working in the mechanical service, he would come across vehicles in need of body repairs…he thought of his friend John Fontaine.
In 1979 John and Leon had set up shop in the garage at Leon’s home in Surry. They named the garage J & L Auto Body and that was the beginning of our body shop.
When the dealership Leon had been working at closed in 1992, Leon opened his own shop, Leon’s Auto Center, on Victoria Street in Keene. A year later, Leon’s Auto Center started towing for AAA and it was Leon and his Dad that drove the 1 truck he had. In that same year, Leon began running his used car sales department. Also during that time John Fontaine and 6 employees were doing body repairs at the J & L Auto Body shop in Surry.
With both businesses’ experiencing steady growth, Leon and John decided the next step was to combine the two into one shop. In 1995 Leon Watkins Auto Center was incorporated...
d/b/a Leon’s Auto Center/ J & L Auto Body.
John Fontaine
John worked after school and throughout the summers at a local Body Repair Shop. In 1979, after working for 10 years at this shop, Leon had approached John and asked him to do body repair for him in Leon's garage at his home in Surry.
They named the garage J & L Auto Body. By 1983, Leon and John built a new Body Repair Shop next to Leon's home and had 3 employees. By 1985 the shop had doubled in size and John's 3 employees grew to 6.
In 1992, after Leon's employer closed the shop where he was working, Leon opened Leon's Auto Center on Victoria Street in Keene. His mechanical business had grown to include towing and used car sales.
After steady growth for both J & L Auto Body and Leon's Auto Center, naturally the next step was to combine the two into one shop.
In 1995, Leon and John had a state of the art shop built at their current location on 600 Main Street in Keene. That was a big year for Leon and John as Leon Watkins Auto Center became incorporated...
